To be eligible for a J-1 visa, you must be sponsored by an exchange program that is approved by the U.S. Department of State. The following individuals can apply for a J-1 visa:
- Students: Individuals who are enrolled in an exchange program that involves academic study or work-based training.
- Scholars: Individuals who are participating in a research or teaching exchange program.
- Trainees: Individuals who are participating in a training program that is not available in their home country.
- Interns: Individuals who are participating in an internship program that is related to their field of study or profession.

- Au pairs: Individuals who are participating in a cultural exchange program that involves providing childcare services to a host family.
- Summer Work Travel Participants: Individuals who are participating in a cultural exchange program that involves temporary work and travel in the U.S. during their summer break.
It’s important to note that J-1 visa holders must return to their home country for at least two years after completing their exchange program before they are eligible for certain types of U.S. visas or permanent residency.
